We are now at the station of Genesis 13:16.
The verse is set in the context of God reaffirming the
Abrahamic Covenant as written in Genesis 13:14-18. This happened after Abram departed from Lot
over a strife between the herdsmen of Lot and his. From the context passage, we
learn that pursuing peace entails departure from strife. This brings to mind Hebrews 12:14 where believers are
encouraged to pursue peace and work at living a holy life in order to see
God.
The footnotes to Hebrews 12:13-14 of the New English Translation Bible are
pertinent points to note. In Hebrews 12:13, believers are told
to “make straight paths for your feet” which is figurative for “staying on
God’s paths”. In the next verse, we see
that God will lead those who do so in peace.
Then in Philippians 4:6-8, we are assured
of the peace of God that surpasses all understanding when we tell all our
requests to God. Hence, when all these things are taken together, it would mean
that staying on God’s paths is simply to rely on God for everything.
We see in Acts 10:15 and Acts 11:9 of the Amplified Bible that unholy means
common and hence, holy would mean uncommon.
Moving away from strife and not be engaged in quarrels is uncommon;
holy. Some people you meet are just hell
bent on misunderstanding and irritating you.
For such, love them from a distance and thereby pursue peace.
