The apostle Paul realized that he desperately needed
to rest from trying to keep the Law (Matthew
11:28, Romans
7:24-25). And that rest is found
only in the essence of the 4th commandment; honor the Sabbath.
The love, mercy, and grace of God the Father can be
seen from the Law. Even when He gave the
Law, He also provided the way to keep it. He always provide a way out. Hence, the Sabbath was made for man, not man
for Sabbath (Mark
2:27).
In summary, the Law leads us to the love of God that
is in Christ crucified. Knowing the love
of God for us empowers us to love Him and others in return. By so doing, we intrinsically fulfill the
requirements of the Law.
To reiterate, “The Sabbath was made for
man, not man for the Sabbath”. To me, that verse refers Sabbath (rest) to the
gift of salvation that is to be had in Christ Jesus (Matthew
11:28, Romans
4:25). Hence, accepting
the love of God through Christ crucified
honours the Sabbath.
According to Hebrew
9:14,
The
precious blood of Jesus has cleansed the
conscience from dead works and lifeless observances to serve the ever
living God.
