We are now at the
station of John 1:51.
The verse is set in the context of the first converts of Jesus’ public
ministry and the first recorded miracle performed by Jesus when He turned water
into the best quality wine.
In the context
passage, Jesus just started His earthly ministry. He revealed some things about Nathanael which
apparently only Nathanael himself knew. Amazed, Nathanael addressed Jesus as
Rabbi and somewhat indicated his belief in Jesus as a prophet. It was at this point that John 1:51 came on stage. Essentially, John 1:51 is saying that
Jesus would perform more miraculous signs that would attest to His identity as
the Promised Messiah. The immediate
chapter that follows recorded the first miracle of Jesus turning water into top
quality wine. It was His credential and
evidence declaring Him as the Promised Messiah.
Hence, John 1:51
is talking about the “impending
miracles attesting to Jesus as the Promised Messiah”. It also speaks of God showing His glory
through Jesus of Nazareth.
Jesus of Nazareth
performed so many miracles during His earthly ministry that if they were
recorded one by one, the world itself could not contain the books that would be
written as stated in John 21:25. The
Holy Spirit led the apostle John to record seven miracles in his account of the
gospel so that the reader may believe in Jesus of Nazareth as the Christ. This is recorded in John 20:30-31.
